FULL PRESS RELEASE:

The Fourteenth Annual Tappahannock Rotary Andrew Reavis Memorial Croaker Fishing Tournament was a success with a fleet of 96 boats competing for the biggest croaker prize on a day of relatively calm weather – a breezy 10 mph wind, blue skies, and a perfect temperature around 70° – the 20 mph gusts of wind convinced several boats to return home earlier than planned. This annual event drew as usual many fishermen from far afield, including Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. On Saturday, May 20th, boats took to the Rappahannock River launching at June Parker Marina, the Dock Street ramp in town on Hoskins Creek, and at Croaker Head Quarters Garrett's Marina in the lower county. This year’s winning croaker weighed in at 1.30 lbs, a tad above last year’s winner catch at 1.10 lb.

This Rotary event raises funds to support many club programs which include local, national and international causes. Supported by over 15 corporate sponsors and a full crew of Tappahannock Rotary club volunteer members, the final weigh-in took place at Garrett’s Marina with the results posted on the leaderboard board as entries were weighed in. The full results and photo gallery can be seen on facebook.com/bigcroaker

Rotary Croaker Tournament Chairman Jay Brimmer was ably assisted Jim Wawner (weighmaster), Carl Strock (President elect), Bill Croxton (grill master), Joanne Ruffa (children’s t-shirt art contest), Sarah Pope, Michael Rawlings and David Broad (publicity, advertising and promotion), Bud Smith (Sponsorship Coordinator), Wright Andrews (Marketing Coordinator). Rotary members Monte Gladding handled ramp launch at June Parker Marina, Chuck Gilchrist and Bill Croxton managed Dock Street, Emerson Hughes and Ron Geiger were responsible for Garrett’s Marina. After the end of the tournament Doc Frank logged in catches at June Parker Marina, and Mac Garrett at Dock Street.

The economic impact to the Tappahannock community is estimated at over $30,000 based on 90+ boats and 200+ contestants staying overnight at hotels, and purchasing meals and gas.

Tappahannock Rotary wishes to thank Rick Garrett and Louis Muse at the Garrett’s Marina for their logistical support by providing ramp, fuel, ice and supplies to numerous contestants and the use of their facilities for the weigh-in and presentation of prizes.
